GOALS FOR ART DOCENTS
The goal of the Apollo Art Docent Program is for each student to have a monthly art lesson that teaches the elements and principles of art, exposes them to different artists, and allows them to experience different materials and mediums.
Within each each grade level and art topic we have suggested additional projects to consider. You are not limited to only teaching these projects but we do encourage Docents to remember that the goal of the program it to teach valuable lessons in art that will enrich students awareness of varied art techniques, elements, and art periods.

HANGING & PHOTOGRAPHING WORK
Mounting & Hanging Artwork
- There is lots of wall space, please use it! Students are thrilled to see their artwork decorating the halls.
- Feel free to make the displays as simple or as fancy as you want.
- Please include the students name under their masterpiece.
- Please add the, "Made possible by the PTA" card on each display. These are located in the art room, most teachers have them and it is available here for download: PTA Art Docent Signs
- Mounting artwork is a nice finish to the students work. You can have the students back their artwork with black or colored construction paper or do it for them dependent on time and age. This is not required but adds a nice touch.
- Please include a "Made possible by the PTA" sticker on the back of the work. The stickers can be found in the art room.
It is our RESPONSIBILITY AS VOLUNTEERS
to keep the Art Room clean.

TIPS FOR TEACHING KIDS
- Use a comfortable teaching voice, not too loud, not too soft.
- Have an attention cue for the kids; train then to respond to it. You may try "Are you Mona Lisa Ready" meaning eyes are forward, mouth is quiet, and hands are still/in lap. Use the cue and WAIT for the kids to pay attention
- Don't start teaching if the kids are still talking. WAIT TIME is an amazing tool.
- Be specific with your instructions to the students. You can demonstrate techniques, draw examples on the board, and show your sample. Students learn in different ways, so explain both verbally and visually.
- Praise good behavior and you will see more of it!
- Reward good behavior by making students your helpers.
- Too many students at a sink can be trouble. Monitor clean-up by assigning rows or groups of students as necessary.
- Encourage students to be individually creative. Not every art project should look like everyone else's. There are no real mistakes in art. "Mistakes" can be turned into some of the most interesting and beautiful results. Art should be fun, not stressful. If some students want their project to be simpler or more detailed, it is up to them!
- Be prepared for some children to complete the activity earlier than others. Our young artists always welcome crayons and blank paper. PROVIDE OTHER ACTIVITIES
- Give children advance warning when time is running out.
- If you have a student or two who don't finish in time, the teacher will usually allow them to use moments of free time during the next week to complete the project on their own. You may need to leave a few supplies for that student, or often the teacher may have some of their own supplies for the student to use. Make sure you check back to make sure all projects are done.
- Move around the room when you teach. If a student is having troubles staying on task, use proximity...teach near them, don't stop what you are doing to "call them out."
- Try to interact individually with each student. While walking around the room try pointing out to each student individually what you like about their project.
- Do not alter the student’s art. Each piece of art work should look unique. There is no need to alter or repaint the projects once the children leave unless it absolutely necessary (ie: needs to be mounted or is structurally important)
- If you'd like to share a tip about something that worked really well for you on a particular art project, let us know by email.
